# Is crypto ESM-only? Can you require() it?

> crypto@1.0.1 is a CommonJS package. CommonJS — require() works on every Node.js version we test.

This package is no longer supported and has been deprecated. To avoid malicious use, npm is hanging on to the package name.

Last verified Sep 9, 2026 against crypto@1.0.1.

crypto ships CommonJS only. require("crypto") works on every Node.js version we test (18, 20, 22, 24 and 26) and in Bun. import "crypto" also works because Node.js and Bun can import CommonJS from ES modules, but only the default export is guaranteed; named imports depend on Node's static analysis of the module.

**Deprecated:** This package is no longer supported. It's now a built-in Node module. If you've depended on crypto, you should switch to the one that's built-in.

## What to do

1. require("crypto") works on every Node.js version we test (18, 20, 22, 24 and 26) and in Bun.
2. From ES modules use the default import: import crypto from "crypto"; then destructure. Named imports only work when Node.js can statically detect the exports.
3. TypeScript: no types are available for crypto; declare the module yourself if you need them.
4. This package is deprecated: This package is no longer supported. It's now a built-in Node module. If you've depended on crypto, you should switch to the one that's built-in.
